Sexuality and Hate Crimes

 VIDEO: Play Now

This documentary protests the brutalities committed against homosexuals in Brazil. In a society dominated by machismo and religious and moralist values, the lack of rights for LGBTT communities has already lead to the deaths of thousands of Brazilian citizens. Hate crimes come from different segments of society with the Catholic Church and radical evangelical groups contributing to the rising intolerance as they actively campaign against the rights of sexual minorities in the country.

From the beginning of this series of films about metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, several of the films’ protagonists have been brutally murdered by members of society still operating with impunity. For example, in the first months of 2008 there were 45 homicides against gays officially registered in Brazil, yet there are probably many more that went unnoticed. Many of the victims are beaten beyond recognition. They are murdered simply because they are gays, lesbians, or transsexuals.

This film decries intolerance and is dedicated to all of those who have been senselessly murdered in Brazil and worldwide.
