José Castillo is a master's student at the University of Texas at Austin. He is pursuing his M.A. in photojournalism after having received his B.S. in Radio-TV-Film from the same institution. He has had images exhibited at the UT NPPA Spring Show in 2008, and at Lonestar Studios in San Antonio in 2007. This summer he will participate in the '09 News21 program, a product of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism.
Drew Anthony Smith currently works in Baltimore, MD at a group of newspapers owned by the Tribune Company. Prior to his current position, he graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2007 and worked internship/photo positions in Florida, Missouri, and Virginia. Smith's work has, in one way or another, been used by The Associated Press, Key West Magazine, The Houston Chronicle, The Guardian, Kyodo News, Fort Worth Weekly, The New York Times, Fresh Thoughts Magazine, and The Daily Texan.
In light of the recent violence and fear that have dominated the news about cities along the border between the United States and Mexico, it is easy to forget that the experience of living in these communities is complex and storied. These interviews and images illuminate the extent to which life on one side of the border is deeply intertwined with life on the other.
